Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do
Ramblings, Politics March 24th. 2007, 12:00pmI found a link to this book over on Disgusted Beyond Belief. I took some time perusing the chapters and have decided to add it to my long list of books to read.
Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do is based on one single idea: Consenting adults should not be put in jail unless they physically harm the person or property of a nonconsenting other.
I’ve long considered myself part of the legalize (and track, and regulate, and tax) marijuana crowd, but I could never fully parse the reasons why I was in favor of it for marijuana but against it for other “more harmful” drugs at the same time. I always knew there was a logical disconnect there, and have never taken the time to rectify it. Hopefully, Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do will help with part of that. Perhaps I’m starting with the wrong premise.
Anyway, that’s just one of the issues the book addresses, and this is more of a personal reminder to read it than a commentary on the book or its subjects.

Glad to have introduced this book to you. I first found it in the dead-tree version, which I still have. Then later I found out the entire book was online, which I thought was a rather cool thing to do.
I think the author is now dead, and I may be wrong about this, but I think he may have died after he was denied in court the right to use marijuana to help him with his chemotherapy. Which is a sad thought. But like I said, I’m not sure if that is the case - someone who did speak out on such things did die that way, but I can’t recall if it was this author or a different one.
I’m for legalizing all consensual behavior just because when you criminalize it, you feed corruption into the system by the way you have to identify and prosecute it - people don’t report consensual crimes, so you have to do random stops, entrapment, and other nasty things like that. And in the meanwhile, you will never stop it, though you will make a lot of criminals very rich.
